In 2014 BolteLang’s annual painting show brings together three Berlin based artists – Charlotte Herzig, Tobias Spichtig and Henning Strassburger.

Charlotte Herzig is a painter who uses a multitude of technics and in-situ interventions to display her abstract paintings: murals, sculptural structures that become surroundings for painterly composition, and all-encompassing environments. Herzig applies simple gestures with repetitive patterns, such as filling entire walls with horizontal pencil line drawings, smudging entire surfaces with watery paint or obsessively covering floors with chalk to set-up meditative and playful settings. In her paintings, motives such as suns, bushes, fruits and leaves emerge out of the densely layered and worked surfaces to reveal luscious but mysterious landscapes full of intuitive and far-out narration, a cacophony of colour and form.

Herzig, born 1983 in Vevey, Switzerland, has a BFA from the University of Art and Design in Lausanne (ECAL) and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Recent exhibitions include Friday, group show curated by Samuel Leuenberger and Elise Lammer, Autocenter, Berlin (2014); Harum Scarum, group show curated by Guillaume Pilet, Blancpain Art Contemporain, Geneva (2013); Plate Mappe, group show, Curtat Tunnel, Lausanne (2012); Nu Body, group show, Eleanor Harwood Gallery, San Francisco (2012)

Tobias Spichtig’s new series of paintings consider a theoretical structure of primitivism as a state of being within a highly technologized environment.  Epson archival ink, used in inkjet photo printing, is applied manually to the raw canvas. Mostly monochrome the paintings acknowledge the cliché of the modern colour field, while relying on the image currency of the present (printer ink, which is more expensive than insulin and human blood).

Spichtig was born in 1982 in Lucerne, Switzerland.  He received his BFA and MFA from the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, Zurich. Recent exhibitions include Attention Economy, group show, Kunsthalle Wien (2014); This is what happened in the jungle, solo show, Eleven Rivington, New York (2013); Celluloid Brushes: An Anthology of the Filmic Perception of the Artist from 1942 till Today, group show, Ludlow 38, New York (2013); It is all in the detail., group show, Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel (2013); The blue, the red, the green, the cuboid and the pyramid, solo show, Ursula Blickle Stiftung, Kraichtal (2012); Melanchotopia, group show, Witte de With, Rotterdam (2011); Bilderwahl! Metamorphose … heute!, group show, Kunsthaus Zurich (2010/11).

Henning Strassburger’s work emerges as a kind of balancing act through questioning the tension between image and likeness in the age of electronic media. He reflects the image-phantasms of a culinary exaggerated morphing-culture, which constantly spits out new Fata Morganas that often turn out to be empty artefacts of a consumer industry. On this threshold, his paintings propose passionate confessions towards a contemporary form of painting.

Strassburger was born 1983 in Meissen, Germany and studied Fine Art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Recent exhibitions include Strike the Pose, solo show, Soy Capitán, Berlin (2014); What this does, solo show, Salon Dahlmann, Berlin (2014); Unfinished Season, group show, Nagel Draxler, Köln (2014); Luggage and Observations, group show, Galerie Klaus Gerrit Friese, Stuttgart (2014); The Digital Divide by Henning Strassburger, group show, Sies + Höke, Düsseldorf (2013); Berlin.Status (2), group show, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2012); Freie Sicht, Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden (2012); indexternal, solo show, Soy Capitán, Berlin (2012); I AM A GIRL, solo show, Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago (2012).
